No, I would not recommend this to a friend
A sword is a sword. My child loves pirates & anything to do w/them.. He has loads of swords, some that make better sounds & light up. You cannot turn this one off, which means it eats batteries.

My kids love this sword, especially the swooshing and clanking sound effects. It was a bit hit at xmas.

I don't think it encourages violence, rather it channels energy into creative and imaginative adventures (involving swordplay of course!)
