I bought this to take it apart and connect it to something I built. I was very impressed with the construction quality of this product. Unlike many electronics toys, which are shiny on the outside and are junk on the inside, this product is well crafted and well built all the way through. If all Wild Planet toys are built this well, they could become toys passed from one generation to the next.

I got this after seeing it on hack-a-day, and then getting on the waiting list to get one. I am so happy I got this, because ive found so many uses for it. Ive used it for my car PC, a night vision camera that I built, and my son has used it on a home build RC car that I helped him make.

The only downside to it is that its bulky, and it comes setup for PAL, but after finding the resistor, I changed it to NTSC.

This innovative and well-engineered replacement part is now in more demand than the toy it was designed for. Don't believe me? [@]I ordered mine just for this purpose, and I would still buy it again. (Too bad they're sold out.) The next cheapest head-mounted display costs over five times this much. The two things that could use improvement is the wire length and the mounting. The wire is too short, I can't route it into my pocket where the RCA-to-headset adapter is. To be fair, this was not an engineering oversight, as the part was intended to plug into a hand-held remote control. The angle of the monocle could use improving. Instead of facing directly forward, it faces to the right. If there were more of these in stock, I would lengthen the wire and modify the frame. While I won't buy the whole spy video car just to take the headset from it, I am planning to buy it as birthday gift for a relative. I hope Wild Planet unveils more toys with displays such as this in the years to come. (By the way, you can make a REAL night-vision headset now, so what are you waiting for?)

While I'm sure the whole car is a great toy for kid (or even adults, its a great product) I need to say that this spare part monitor headset properly modified is the cheapest and smallest available monitor on the market.
Just sad its black and white... how about a 2-eyes color one with sound? lol

Great product - Easy to modify!
By RickVerified Reviewer from Utah on 11/21/2007

Adaptable, Durable, Excellent value, Lots of Fun, Quality Construction
Cons:
Bulky
Best Uses:
Aerial Photography, Creative Development
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I built a cable harness to plug the headset into a video receiver. We have a transmitter hooked to a camera on a R/C airplane. We can then see a live preview in the headset of what the camera sees, and we can steer the camera with a radio control unit. This is a great, low cost video goggle which makes this all possible in a highly portable way.

I bought this display to hack into a wearable display for a standard video output. It works great. The design is simple enough to take apart and put back together.

By gianVerified Reviewer from phx, az on 11/12/2007
Pros:
Lots of Fun, Quality Construction, Very "usable"
Best Uses:
Creative Development, Group Play, Imaginative Play, Individual Play, Older Children, Young Children
Describe Yourself:
Working-class hacker
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This product includes a very nice display which is very easy to turn into an NTSC monitor. My purpose for using the item in this way is to use it to monitor camera views via a video downlink from an RC model. As well as being a very nicely constructed gadget, the modification was simple, and does not stray very far from what the device was originally purposed. This is an excellent piece of kit.

Great Deal!

I'm still deciding exactly how I will use this, but that's the great thing about it - there are so many ways that the display can be used!

This display, originally intended for the RC spy car , is dramatically less expensive than any other equivalent "off the shelf" display.

I only wish they'd come out with a color version!

Great little gadget and the best of it's kind for it's price. Modifying it is a breeze. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I will, however, recommend that you spend the extra dough and buy the whole Spy Car kit and kabootle. It's worth it in parts alone! (my next big purchase).

Great for other uses.
By Scripting Guy from Ogdensburg, NY on 10/8/2007
Pros:
Easily modified, Easily openable
Cons:
Unattractive Design
Best Uses:
Too many to list
Describe Yourself:
Electrical Engineer
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Well, this device can be modified (with some Internet help) into a low-cost video headset that just about any device that outputs to a TV could use.

I like that, and I like expandability.
